Name: Jolie Foster
Nickname: Jo
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Occupation: Barista
Appearance:
Personality:
"Risking everything and playing hero only gets you killed." To Jolie, bravery is stupidity and pride is the worst weakness, and anyone who calls her a coward can believe whatever they like. She doesn't let pride guide her actions.
Since she was young, she has looked out for herself above all else, with only one exception. That exception also happens to be her greatest weakness.
Jolie first learned to suck up her pride for the sake of her younger brother, Sam. She learned that talking tough and risking your life doesn't always work out like it does in movies, and she could very well get herself killed, leaving her brother alone in the world. Or worse, she could take him down with her. That was unacceptable, and so she stopped those thoughts and focused instead on keeping them both alive, until the day when she no longer had anyone to look out for but herself.
History:
Jolie has always known what she is, and what she can do. Her parents were both witches, and they spent most of their time working as doctors, which led Jo to be more of a parent to her younger brother than their real parents. But regardless, they both loved their little family very much, and in what little time they were home, Jolie's mother and father were the best parents any child could ask for -- doting, caring, reading them stories and making the most of the time they spent together.
But of course, no happiness lasts forever. When Jolie was thirteen -- Sam was six -- the doorbell rang in the middle of the night. Jo and Sam sat hidden on the stairs and watched as their mother answered the door. She spoke to the caller quietly, but Jolie could hear the panic in her voice. Her mother called for her father, barely concealing her fear, and together they helped their visitor into the sitting room.
Jolie couldn't see the stranger's face beneath the black cloak he huddled under, but as he limped into their home with the help of her parents, he left behind a trail of red.
Ever the dutiful sister, Jolie helped Sam back to bed, instinctively knowing she didn't want to see what was happening downstairs. She had just tucked him in when the first explosions started.
To this day she only remembers a little of that night. She and her brother hid in the secret room in the attic until the explosions (she knows now that some of it was gunfire and the rest was magick) and the shouts and screaming stopped. When the sun came up, she and her brother left. She didn't need to look to know her family had been killed.
Jolie and Sam moved around often. No one pursued them, but being a part of the Super Natural world has its consequences. Jolie took any job she could get, and when she was seventeen, she was offered one that would set her up for life. She was suspicious of course, but the idea of being able to send Sam to school led her to take the simple delivery work. Unfortunately, taking work from the Super Natural mafia has its downsides, one of which is taking responsibility for the cargo.
When Jolie got to the delivery location, her stomach bottomed out. The recipients had been slaughtered. She left quickly, watching to make sure she wasn't followed, and returned to her boss. But somehow, he decided that it was her fault.
Sobbing, Jolie stepped closer to the young, beautiful man with the roman nose. A vampire. "But I did what you said. They were already dead when I got there."
Nicolas smiled at her. It wasn't the same smile as the one he'd shown her when she first came to him, a smile of compassion and caring. This was the kind of smile a predator gave helpless prey before it went in for the kill. "I understand that, sweetheart, but you see my dilemma. I have all of this...product, and no one to pay for it. It certainly isn't my fault the buyer was unable to come through, is it?"
"No, but--" Jolie choked on her tears. "I don't have any money. I wouldn't have taken the job if I did."
Nicolas chuckled, echoed by two beautiful goons on either side of him. "Money? Who said you had to pay me with money? Sure, money grants power to the weak, but I hardly need it. No, you'll pay me back in something you have plenty of."
"What? I'll do anything." She felt her heart drop as his eyes narrowed in triumph.
"It's simple really," he said, examining his nails. "We have to eat, don't we?"
The blood drained out of her face. "Anything else. I can't die. My brother--"
"I didn't say anything about killing you. Or even that it's your blood I want," he said in a bored tone. "But speaking of your brother..."
"No!" Jolie screamed, running at him. She wasn't sure what she intended to do. Her magick wasn't particularly strong, and she didn't really know how to use it. But before she could think to do anything, Nicolas's goons rushed her and she found herself on the ground, huddled in pain.
"Now, now. Don't get worked up. I just need leverage to make sure you don't run off on me. I'll keep him here to pay back part of your blood debt, and in the meantime you'll do odd jobs for me whenever I call on you. I think that's more than fair considering how much I'm losing in this deal."
She could feel more than see his shadow as he stood over her. "Hell, no! You can't have him."
He laughed again, but this time his lackeys were silent. "But you see, I already do."
Feeling ill, Jolie looked up at him. "I don't believe you."
"No?" He snapped his fingers, alerting the blond boy to his right. "Call Thomas."
The boy did as he was told and handed the phone to his boss. Nicolas put the it to his ear. "Put the boy on." He held out the phone for her.
She snatched it from his hand. "Sam? Sammy, is that you?"
"Jo? What's going on? They came to the room and said you were in trouble and I could help."
New tears came to her eyes at the sound of her brother's voice. "Everything's going to be okay, baby. Just do whatever they say, okay?"
"I'm scared, Jo"
"I know you are. Don't worry and stay calm. I always take care of you, don't I?"
He sniffed. "Mhm."
"I'll figure this out," she said, more to convince herself than Sam. "Just stay safe until I figure this out Sammy."
"I want to go home. I don't want you to--"
The phone was yanked from her hand. Nicolas pressed the disconnect button and handed it back to the blond boy. "Now, do we have an agreement?"
Sobbing, she nodded slowly.
"Good. Now, why don't you go home until I have work for you."
"Wait," she said as he turned away. "How long? When do I get my brother back?"
"Get him back? After the disrespect you just showed me? No, I think yours is a life debt. If you do as I say, your brother stays alive, but he stays alive with us."
"No! Please, you can't--" But Nicolas's goons were on her, holding her down, and a fist connected with her head. Everything went black.
When she woke up, she was in their hotel room. Every trace of Sam had been erased, every article of clothing and toys. She huddled in a ball and cried.
Two years have passed since then. Jolie works as a professional snitch and barista at a locally-owned coffee shop. She sells information to any Super Naturals who have the money to buy it. Not once has she heard from Nicolas or any of his men. She's put all of her efforts into staying alive and learning to use her magick properly in case she ever gets the chance to save her brother, but she's given up hope that he's still alive. Mostly, she pretends he never existed and if anyone asks, she says she's an only child of parents who left her when she was young.
