I laid sprawled on my back with my arms behind my head, facing the way I came so I could see whoever or whatever was approaching. The sky was clear and the stars were sparkling like there was no tomorrow. Maybe there wasn't. Though I couldn't think about that. As far as I cared right now, there could be no tomorrow or a tomorrow. I sighed softly. The air was soft and warm, suggesting the first prickles of summer, wrapping around me like a blanket. Why couldn't all nights be like this? Nothing but the crickets chirping and the owls hooting. Because the nights like this would loose their magic. Satisfied with that answer, I looked up at the North star or Polaris. Then I looked over at Orion and the star Beetle Juice that helped make it up. Such wonderful constellations. Yeah. I wonder what my folks are doing. Were they even worried about me? No. They didn't care about me or else they would have found me by now, right? I shook those random thoughts out of my head as quickly as they came. Instead I turned more to the present. Jisa... Yeah. What was up with her? Who knows. Nobody ever knew. I don't know if even Jisa knew. I was still fighting my EF theory. It could be true..but still. Everything just didn't add up. As you can guess my logical side hasn't come into the argument. I wish it would so that one problem could be put to rest. I closed my eyes, temporarily shutting out my view of the stars. I decided to push those thoughts to once side too. I heard a twig snap. My eyes flew open. Oh no. Oh no no no. Not now. Not again. I got a sense of deja vu. I lifted my head slightly. I smiled at my rash fear. A deer's head appeared over the slight ridge coming up to Spellcrest. It probably came here for the same reason I did, it was peaceful and quiet and there was such good grass! I put my head down and held perfectly still. I hadn't changed since my sparring session with Jisa. Which meant I was still in black. The dark color made me seem invisible. No one could see me unless the looked really hard. Or unless they were another shifter, like I was. The deer didn't notice me and started to graze. I relaxed again, more jumbled thoughts entering my head. So what's the plan now? I don't know. Let's see...nothing. Good plan.

He had left his place and was wandering deeper into the forest. He needed to get away, when he was far enough way he shifted with ease, shaking his head. Long creamy white forelock falling in front of his eyes as he danced sideways for a moment and threw himself up into a rear before shooting off at a fast gallop, he settled into his gait, slowing back to a canter. Lean long legs carrying him steady across the land. The moonlight illuminated his coat and he looked up to the sky and took in some of the stars. He looked down in time to clear a fallen tree. He weaved in and out of the trees with ease and tossed his head, though he had a thicker body he still could get around. He slowed to a walk and picked his way through, coming up to Spellcrest he became a little more antsy and lowered his head, catching the scent of another shifter. Quietly he looked into the area the smell was coming from he didn’t see anything until she was startled by a deer. He smiled and trotted into the area, staying cautious of her one blue eye on her, as he settled ears flicking nervously and nares wide with fright. He couldn’t help it how did he know for sure she was a shifter and not the EF?

I closed my eyes, I was so close to dozing off. Everything was so quiet and normal. That is until a sound broke the usual night noises. EF on a horse? Was one finally smart enough to use a horse to come after me? I doubted it. They weren't that smart. I did the same thing like when I heard the deer. My head lifted slowly. What I saw was a little surprising and yet not. It was a frightened, nervous shifter, a palomino horse. Had it encountered the EF? That thought alone made me stand and shift myself. I was now a grey horse that glimmered and flickered in the darkness. It was as if I were fog over a pond. If there were EF behind this shifter I would want to be ready. I would more than likely flee, I didn't like to fight until I didn't need too. Besides it was easier to fight them after they had been chasing you for hours. I flattened my ears and snapped my teeth together, showing I meant no harm. Are the enemies chasing you? I seemed to question with my body language. Please say no. I don't want to get tangled up with those creeps again. Besides they were so hard to get rid of! Like ticks on a dog. I scented the air, ears pricked to catch every little sound. Nobody except for our mingled scents and nothing sounded out of the ordinary. Well, I had answered my own question. Ears flopping down and neck lowered I was relaxed. Nothing to fear. The other shifter was just fearful of me. I shook my head. Best to be safe than to be sorry. Letting my body shrink back into a human I laid down again, the same position in the grass as before. It was as if the other shifter didn't show his face. If he wanted to talk I would be here. I brushed a strand of brown hair out of my face and gazed up at the stars again, acting as if I was ignoring him. I wasn't. I had half my attention on him and the other half on everything around us. Not being aware of your surroundings and the people around them could get you killed. Easily.

He shook his head and relaxed knowing she wasn’t a threat, she shifted back and resumed her original position, he was thinking about and decided to. He shifted, now standing on two legs instead of four. He sat down in the grass, bangs hanging slightly in his blue eyes. He leaned back and looked up to the sky, he was on alert, knowing they could be anywhere. He could point out a lot of the stars and a lot of the constellations but he didn’t feel like it. He just wanted to look at the beauty of the night sky. He had part of his attention on her not all nor half just a little bit that would allow him to know if she moved or what not. Lovely night isn’t it? He spoke a hint not even just a dash of a southern accent coming through. Im Zach and you are? He spoke once more waiting.

I again lifted my head as the palomino horse disappeared and in its place was a boy. Maybe two years older than I. I liked the fact that he seemed stayed on alert even though he had seen I was no threat. At least I knew that I didn't have to go storming off into the forest after giving what I called 'Ashleigh's life lessons' to some ignorant male. I listened patiently as he remarked about how lovely the night was and introduced himself. I found myself noting just the slight brush of southern accent. I seemed to ignore him for a few minutes. It seemed safe enough to tell my name. "Yeah it is. I'm Ashleigh." I replied. My voice was blank with no interest in it at all. I wanted to gauge this boy, see what he was like. I didn't offer my nickname of Ash. That was reserved for people I considered close friends. "Are you new around here? I haven't seen you around." I asked, attempting a weak conversation. Rather smell you. I could smell or sense a supernatural was around before I could see them. I wasn't much of a talker, after all I didn't exactly have anyone talkative to talk to. I let a slight smile paint my face. It was all right to talk to people sometimes and let them see what your feeling. Sometimes. Not every minute of the day. Just sometimes.

He was more so focusing on everything around him except her at this moment in time. Eyes were looking up at the sky, taking in the moon and the stars. How everything was laid out in the sky, it was like a map leading you from one place to another and then back again. He looked at her as she spoke and nodded, nice to meet you Ashleigh and to answer your question yes im new moved here about a week ago but I really haven’t gone out until today. He smiled and stood, care for a little race? He asked smirking and looking right at her, yes he knew she would win because of her breed but he didn’t care it was more for fun than anything.

He passes. I like him. I mean, he seemed ok. I smiled cockily at his challenge. He has no idea... I jumped to my feet with ease. "Alright your on! Where to? Or are we just running till we drop?" Like I was flicking on a light switch, I shifted without waiting for an answer. How glorious it felt to have my legs stretch and my back lengthen to those of a horse. I always enjoyed the time that I was a horse, no matter what. I shook myself, starting from my head and then down to the happy flick of my tail. I pawed the ground impatiently, then reared to the sky as if I wanted to run among the stars. My breed was bred specifically to run. That's what I wanted to do. Run. I was excited to finally run with another horse/shifter. My nostrils quivered as I waited to see what Zach would do.

He listened to her words and smirked, just till we drop dear. He watched her shift, shaking head to tail. She pawed and reared. He shifted and struck out throwing his weight into his hind end and pawing the air, he shook his head and pinned his ears. How he loved the feel of being a horse, he landed with a thud and danced sideways, muscles rippling under his golden coat. Pawing the ground, he flicked his tail once, twice and then a third time and he was off. At a slow pace at first, saving his energy for when it mattered that and he didn’t want to get too far ahead of her. Long slender legs hit the ground and popped back up, he tossed his head and settled into his gait.

Dear? I squealed before snorting. My slick gray coat reminded me of moonlight, with hardened muscles sliding underneath. I watched as he too pawed the sky and pawed the ground. His mane was like silver and his coat like gleaming gold. This wasn't his first time to shift, it looked as if he had done it a lot and was comfortable with his other side. That was good, I would have someone to challenge me. I watched him carefully, waiting for the signal to go. It would come suddenly so I gathered all my muscles, making them spring loaded. When he leaped forward I sprang forward, imitating the horses that I saw racing on TV one time flying out of the gate. I fell easily into a gallop, trying to keep my head ahead of his. The four beats of my gallop pounded in my ears. I was dancing to my own song, my own speed song one that I only I could hear. My head went back and forth, timed to the beat of my hooves. Legs reached and then dug into the ground. I struck the ground in play without breaking stride. Tossing my head I started to speed up. Let's see what your made of Zach...

He could hear her beats coming up alongside him, she was trying to keep her head ahead of his. He snorted and lowered his head slightly, watching her out of the corner of his eye. He was watching her speed up, well he could at least be faster in the first quarter mile and then the endurance and hardness of his other breed would come into key play later on. He kicked it into gear, easily over taking her, he kept running, a dead gallop legs outstretching before him and contracting, hooves easily taking the fast pace. He pushed himself more, he was holding strong. Muscles and lungs didn’t even ache he widened his nostrils. He tossed his head and kicked out not missing a beat, he had this down, all the times where he just wandered the wild as a horse, occasional shifting back to a boy, he knew he was strong but he didn’t want to flaunt it. He snorted and jumped a log, he could hear water, he squealed put presses on running through the water and over to the other side. Come on darling give it your all.

I kept up easily with him but he was drawing away. You can be faster than me for the first half mile but after that it was my turn to shine! I dipped into my well of speed and brought out another gear. Log! I popped over it like it wasn't there. My ears pricked excitedly as I heard the water. I half leaped half flounder through before pounding after him. Come on Ash he's taunting you! My eyes flamed as I accepted the challenge. I wasn't even trying as I went faster, feeling each one of my hooves hammer the ground. I felt like I was flying! The thrill of running was settling over me like a cloud. My neck lowered and stretched as my legs contracted, pausing in the air for a moment, before reaching out again. Time to pass him Ash..

He couldn’t keep this up much longer and so he dropped back in gaits quickly. He had no problem admitting defeat, he had never been one that needed to win it had and always would be just fun for him. He came to a complete halt, his golden hide darkened in places with sweat. He lowered his head and took in air through his nostrils. Smelling everything sweet as well, he liked this girl a lot, even though few words had been spoke between them he just knew. He raised his head and pranced before stopping and watching her run, it was an amazing thing to watch, it brought a smile to his lips. He stood proudly upon his spot, waiting for his lady to return to him.

I surged ahead of him as he slowed. I didn't want to stop! I ran on for a minute or two. Then I dropped my pace before wheeling around and galloping back. My coat was slightly darker than it had been before and I saw that his was too. I threw my head up in the air as far as it could go. Why did you stop? Couldn't keep up? I seemed to tease. I pranced over to him, nipping at his mane and forelock playfully. Arching my neck I half reared launching into a series of short bucks when I landed. Finally I noticed Zach looking proud, and kind of smug. I wonder what's going on in his boy brain... I shook my head threateningly, warning him not to get any outlandish idea planted in his head. I may just trample it before it has time to grow. The thought pleased me greatly.

He shook his head after she had tugged on his mane, teasing him for stopping. He couldn’t help he wasn’t a thoroughbred. He snorted and lowered his head as she threatened him, what was that for?He looked over to her with nothing but kindness in his blues. He turned and trotted back to the water, muzzle dipping into the water and took great sips. Raising his head he turned around flicking his tail across his flanks. He walked back over to her, head lowered. He slowly raised it and nuzzled her check, before nibbling along her neck and spine. He realized what he was doing and pulled back sharply wheeling around, he bolted away from her in fear. His legs stretching out before him and then contracting under him, he stopped when he reached their previous spot and lowered his head and frame down. Head laying flat on the ground as he waited for the storm to come.

I snorted. He knew very well, I suppose. I trotted after him, knowing that he was going back to the water. Dropping my muzzle beside him I drank and then waded in, still drinking. I splashed around, the water wasn't that deep. I trotted/splashed out and stood a little away from Zach. My ears pricked at the sound of an owl and then one ear flicked back to catch the sound of Zach's aprouching hooves. I cocked a hind leg, showing I was relaxed. He nuzzled my cheek then started to groom me nibbling along my neck and back. I turned my head to return the favor but before I could he shied from fear. I did too, thinking that he had heard something not suppose to be proweling around. When he stopped, I kept running. It felt good to run, though I wasn't sure if we were running from terror or just for fun. I bucked and wheeled around returning to where Zach lay. What was wrong with him? I shook my head, making my mane flop back and forth. I wouldn't go as far as to go up to him and lay down next to him but I did stick around. Dropping my head to graze on a patch of grass, I kept one ear cocked to him waiting.
