} JANE AZGUARD { I'm waking up to ash and dust, I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust Jane took a long and noisy slurp of her orange juice popper and raised her eyebrows in challenge to the small child who sat on the park bench across from her, apple and blackberry popper in hand. The mother was scolding another child near the water fountain, apparently it wasn’t for swimming, news to Jane too who had always treated public fountains as free baths. Plenty of time to mock the midget and get away with it before the mother return. She smiled insolently at the kid’s frown of annoyance and then the loud slurping noise.
She was technically on a self-imposed stakeout due to lack of funds and a rumbly tummy, but you couldn’t be serious all the time. Being part of the EF meant catching shifters, vampires, etc. And if you weren’t catching and killing them, you weren’t doing your job, and if you weren’t doing your job you didn’t get paid, and Jane really needed to get paid. Last she’d checked she had a packet of donuts and two orange popper in her cupboard. Another slurp. Make that one popper.
Her theory was that eventually some form of magical being had tp buy something, say coffee or milk and would have to walk through the plaza. And there Jane would be, ready and waiting in ambush. All she had to do was spot them.
The kid stoped slurping and gave her a Beat that, loser look, Jane grinned, returned him an oh, please, I’s slurp better with no teeth look and put the straw back into her mouth. I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus. This is it, the apocalypse, Whoa. Lyrics from 'Radioactice' by Imagine Dragons

Ashleigh ~Does it make you mad to find that I have grown?~ What was I doing here? I thought to myself. I should be in the forest or by the river not here. Not where someone for the EF could spot me. I shook my head, not quite willing to admit to myself that I was tired of trees and water and wanted a bit of normal, human company. Perhaps I wouldn't interact with them but it was still nice to hear the chatter of normal people with normal lives.
I peered into the shops that lined the street with mild curiosity as I wandered toward the center of the plaza where the fountain stood. I walked with a slight limp, my ankle still bothering me slightly. Another reason I shouldn't be here, where danger could be lurking. Danger is always lurking, no matter where you are Ashleigh.
I shook my head and stopped to stretch. I raised my arms over my head, interlocking my fingers, and leaned back. I felt the muscles in my back flex and stretch. It felt nice. I lowered my arms and lifted my head to the sunshine. It was a beautiful day. I continued my walk to the fountain, watching the spray catch the sunlight. Water had always mesmerized me, and I was sucked back into the memories of playing in Quicksilver River.
Walking up to the side of the fountain, I sat and yawned widely. I reached down to rub my ankle. I wish the ache would go away already. I shook my head, I was not going to let the annoyance get me down. I looked up and watched as people went about their day. I turned at the sound of a splashing child and a mother scolding him. As I was turning back I caught a familiar shape sitting on a bench teasing a small child. I lifted my head nostrils flaring, sniffing the air. So many scents hit me and I sifted through them, trying to find the one that I knew. I stared at the figure so familiar but obscured by the fountain's falling water. I knew her.. ~Bet it hurts so bad to see the strength that I have shown.~ (Inspired by Jisa! Lyrics from Superchick's Pure.)

} JANE AZGUARD { I'm waking up to ash and dust, I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust Slouching against the bench, one leg resting on top of the other to create a triangle, popper resting on her tilted knee, Jane squinted out from underneath the edge of her bennie and stared mournfully at the surrounding bustle. Jane had never been one of the most focused of individuals, and even the idea of getting a child to turn blue in the face, due to suffocating on a straw, was starting to lose its appeal.
Jane glanced over at the still scolding parent, maybe if the little squirt passes out before she gets back, that would be amusei- she stop mid thought and frowned. A girl near the fountain was stretching, not that that was unusual in itself, but, her mind wandered back to a wet afternoon and a horse trying trample her brains out. Jane slouched further into the bench, almost trying to merge into the wooden panels and pulled the bennie further down over her eyes and mangled ear, Now, now, my pretty little pony, you are familiar
Being careful not to move to violently, and catch the eye of on lookers, Jane attempted to get a better view of her target, slowly tilting her head, squinting in the suns glare. she hasn’t seen me ye- the girls head tilted and that ridiculous shifter nose came into play, well bugger.
No sudden moves or she’ll know, that you know, that she’s knows your there Jane frowned, wha? Ignoring the desire to rattle her brain Jane scanned the surrounding area, head tilting only slightly with the direction of her vision, but how to get her away from the busy bustling plaza? Keeping with the lessons of experience Jane had learnt that the EF did not appreciate the involvement of citizens. Apparently it upset their Customer Relations and Insurance Department.
I suppose it’s time for a game of chicken, which of us will break first? Jane took a slurp out of the popper, searching for the dregs with her straw, Bugger, I was never very good at chicken. Ashleigh ~Don't stand up, they'll shoot down the first one who tries. Try to change the world, they'll think you're out of your mind.~ The alarm bells that had developed overtime from many encounters with the EF began to go off. Insane lady, Jane she was called. I recognized her scent almost immediately after I identified her name. I wrinkled my nose, thinking of the time I bit off a chunk of her ear. I had to wash my mouth out with soap for a week to finally get the horrid taste out.
I stopped staring a Jane, sure she probably had seen me from the way she pulled her beanie down further and tried acting inconspicuous, and turned away as if I really hadn't noticed her. What to do, what do to? My brain jumped into overdrive. I couldn't shift here, there were too many people around and I wasn't going to be the Supernatural that exposed all other Supernaturals to the human race. Which meant in order to shift I would have to move to somewhere less crowded. But if I moved somewhere less crowded then the chase would truly begin. If I stayed here, insane lady couldn't do anything because of the crowd. EF had a thing about protecting humans or something. Funny, I didn't know they could care about anything but themselves. I snorted.
So I would wait it out. If I could avoid a chase then I would. Huh, never thought I would hear that thought come into my head. It's for the best after all, who knows how far you can run with that ankle, adrenaline or no. ~Revolutions start when someone crosses the line.~ (Inspired by Jisa! Lyrics from Superchick's Cross The Line.)

} JANE AZGUARD { I'm waking up to ash and dust, I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust Too many people, Jane frowned, but at the same time too few. Her first instinct had been to simply leap up from the park bench, screech a primal battle cry and charge at the girl, arms waving and hope to God that Jane could charge across the plaza faster than the girl could split and disappear into the forest of people. But that may just be my inner Neanderthal wanting a turn.
Think, Janie think, you’re not all brawn, what do you when you can’t attack? When attacking wasn’t an option, another way to harm the victim had to be found, and attacks did not always involve fists, steel and blood. Draw your little white flag, she thought to herself, and wave it around and around, and wait until they let you close.
Not necessarily a plan that the EF officials would approve of and motion to the floor, but that only made it all the more attractive. Jane and the EF officials did not always see eye to eye, but then again that could just be the height difference.
Moving with exaggeration and moving with all the speed that mountains grow at, Jane straightened her spine and not moving her head, slowly placed the popper on the bench beside her thigh. That done, she rose with the same slow care and rotated so that she was facing the little pony at the opposite end of the square.
Attempting to emanate the aura of something harmless, say a puppy, Jane slowly raised her hands, palm facing the shifter, in to line with shoulders, the universal gesture of, may we please talk this out like the civilized individuals we claim to be? Then she smiled, a slash in the shape of a smirk across her face, an empty facade of comfort
Taking a slow step toward the shifter, boot hitting lightly on the paving stones, Jane opened her mouth, hoping the girl wouldn’t just run on the principal that a member of the EF was walking toward her, which would have been sensible. Let’s hope she isn’t the sensible, then.
Oi, Pinkie Pie, she threw her voice so that it would reach the girl, above the sound of bustling people and water on water, Don’t run, I’ve got a proposition for ya Jane took another step, boot on worn tile. Ashleigh ~Don't stand up, they'll shoot down the first one who tries. Try to change the world, they'll think you're out of your mind.~ I stayed seated as I quickly thought out a plan. The plaza was too crowded for me to shift but not too crowded to where I couldn't melt into it and give insane lady the slip. From there I could travel to Downing Park and shift. Stonewick Forest was very close to Downing Park, at least it seemed that way when one was galloping straight to it. I could hide in Stonewick until it was dark enough for me to head toward Jisa's house.
My plan seemed like a good one. But things tended to go wrong with plans, especially if a little thing I like to call shifter's luck comes into play. I wondered if my ankle would give out. I hadn't dared to run or gallop since I injured it.
I stood, just like I normally would if not just a little slower because of my ankle. I shifted my weight to one side, giving the fading injury a break before I started my run. I started to walk towards the crowd when the EF cop started moving slowly towards me. False serenity radiated off her like heat off a blacktop road in the summer. A smile, more like a overly pleased smirk, lit her face as if to be reassuring but beneath the surface her true colors showed.
"Oi, Pinkie Pie," insane lady called as if I was another human one who had normal senses and couldn't hear over the people and water, "Don’t run, I’ve got a proposition for ya." At the same time she took a step on the worn tile. The insult made my blood boil. I curled my lips, mouth slightly open to show my sharpening canines that would be called wolf teeth in my horse form, my darkened brown eyes flashing. Horse translation: You've pissed me off. Any closer and I'll take a chunk out of you. I was not completely human and I wasn't going to let her forget it.
I could hear the booted footfall. Already, I could hear the lies she wanted to me to believe before they dripped out of her foul mouth.
"What? That you'll make my death quick and painless if I just come with you quietly? Yeah, right," I called. With those parting words I turned and took off.
I raced down the red paved sidewalks, going with the crowd but at a much faster pace. I needed to put distance between insane lady and myself before I could actually lose her. Or at least that's what I thought.
I was glad for the slower pace, as I had to weave through the crowd, so I was able to somewhat favor my right ankle. Twinges of pain reminded me that I needed to take it as easily as possible. I didn't need to push myself too hard until it was necessary. ~Revolutions start when someone crosses the line.~ (Inspired by Jisa! Lyrics from Superchick's Cross The Line.)

} JANE AZGUARD { I'm waking up to ash and dust, I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust Jane saw the girl stand, and she felt herself tense, muscles bunching together, ready to push off and rush after the girl, shoving people aside and tackle her, rugby style, to the ground. But the girl paused and then looked toward Jane’s voice, tensing at the words. You could almost see the indignation and injured pried shining off her, like the light from a light-bulb, not dangerous, but it will show you the way.
"What? That you'll make my death quick and painless if I just come with you quietly? Yeah, right," Actually, Jane thought, mildly offended at the almost instant suspicion the girl directed at her, I was just going to get you to buy me lunch, but whatever, this works just as well. Her arms fell to her sides, no point holding them up longer than necessary.
With those parting words the girl began to walk, no scratch that, limp away. Point of weakness spotted, Jane’s expression indicated that if she hadn’t been walking, she would have been rubbing her hands together. “Maybe you’re more of a Rainbow Dash?” Jane sniggered, Pun fully intended.
The girl moved away, into the crowd, at the pace of an enthusiastic speed walker. Jane followed her, at a slightly more sedate speed. Weaving her way through the crowd, and imagining the girl and herself wearing sweat bands and pink tights.
The girl was walking with purpose, you could see that, in between limps, and purpose in a person who was fleeing, nine times out of ten, meant they were following some kind of a plan. The plan, Jane suspected, was to find an out of the way space, turn into a pony and flee for friendlier company. And in the girls position it was a coherent and sensible plan, pity Jane was going to have to interrupt, preferably before the ‘turn into a pony and flee’ part.
Lucky she had come better prepared for a fight this round. When Jane flexed her shoulders muscles she could feel the straps that tethered the pair holsters that rested under her arms and out of sight under her coat. Tight, and heavy with the promise of violence. The left holster cradled a 55. Magnum in it’s tender grip, silencer attached. And the right, Janes smile was predatory and would have made a snake squeamish, was looking after, in a very rudimentary fashion, a Taser. The packaging had claimed that it would completely incapacitate the target, in seconds . Jane had been dying to find out how true the claim was. Ashleigh ~Don't stand up, they'll shoot down the first one who tries. Try to change the world, they'll think you're out of your mind.~ I had heard insane lady's insult before I fled. My blood churned and boiled, the horse demanding that it be let loose. This was a race and it knew to win I had to run. I loosened my tenuous hold on it just a little.
Strands of silver appeared in my hair, eyes grew wider and browner, nostrils widened, ears became pointer and more movable, and my jaw lengthened. My bones grew thicker, as well as larger, and I could feel my strides lengthened because of the few added inches. I could feel the bones in my fingers and toes were slightly fused together. My heart and lungs were also bigger, making it easier for me to draw oxygen and pump that blood throughout my system. I could feel my muscles harden and tendons become more elastic, adding a spring to my step.
This was not my full half shift, it was considerably less noticeably but it gave me a bit of an advantage. But advantages usually had a down side and mine was that I couldn't hold it for long. I either melted back to human form or shifted fully. I couldn't control which. This meant I had to reach Downing Park and soon.
With my new eyesight I could see just a little further behind me that a normal human. I saw flashes of insane lady. She seemed close but not too close. I picked up the pace from a fast walk to a fast jog, more like a slow run to some.
I could see the sign that I knew would read Downing Park in big capital letters, even if I couldn't read it. My fast jog broke into a run. ~Revolutions start when someone crosses the line.~ (Inspired by Jisa! Lyrics from Superchick's Cross The Line.)

} JANE AZGUARD { I'm waking up to ash and dust, I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust Jane followed the girl, keeping several meters behind in an attempt not draw attention to the speed-walk case.
Squinting toward the girl, trying to predicate where she was going and what she was going to do once she got there, Jane frowned. The girl’s hair was changing colour, the brown of her hair now had white streaks spreading through, like weeds. Jane groaned allowed, she getting ready to morph. Jane change her pace to a half jog/half skip, if the kid changed before Jane was within, say, two arm lengths she would have a snow ball’s chance in hell of catching her. And then I can say bye, bye to a warm meal. The shifters proportions had also begun to shift and slide, legs and arms distorting and allowing the girl to pick up her pace. The change was subtle, but it filled Jane with mild dread all the same, and caused her speed up even more.
A familiar shop went by, and then a bench that was on the path that went to the, Jane swung her head up and grinned a welcome to the sign, ‘downing park’.
Out of the way, I’ll give her that.
The shifter must have spotted the sign at the same moment. If the girl had been a car, she would have just gone up a gear, Long legs and muscles pulling her forward and away from Janes reach. Grunting, Jane pushed off her right foot and moved into a sprint, trying to prevent the young shifter from putting a distance any bigger than the current one between them. Unzipped Jacket flapping and boots pounding onto pavement, Jane persuaded the shifter girl into the park. I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus. Ashleigh ~Don't stand up, they'll shoot down the first one who tries. Try to change the world, they'll think you're out of your mind.~ I heard the pounding of booted footsteps that were insane lady. I couldn't help but increase my pace just a little more. Tendons flexed then snapped outward, allowing me to go faster and yet not spend as much energy as I would normally.
It grew harder and harder to hold in the thoroughbred inside me. I loosened my grasp on it a little more as the crowd thinned as I left behind the entrance to the park. My speed increased. I darted from the path and into the bushes and trees.
I couldn't hold back any longer. The shift happened quickly, fueled by adrenaline and the excitement of the chase. I shook myself briefly, feeling relief at giving in to my shifter side and not having to express control over it any longer. We worked together like a horse and rider, each of us giving and taking equally.
I no longer felt the pain in my ankle as I broke into a slow gallop. I knew it would come back soon but for now I reveled in the power of my strides as I galloped toward the north end of Downing Park, where Stonewick Forest began. I was grateful for the long stretches of grass that made it easy to gallop. I treated obstacles as jumps. I leaped over park benches, low hedges, and the occasional flower garden. Not many saw me, as the more reclusive parts of Downing Park were never too crowded.
I flicked an ear back to see if I could catch the sound of the EF cop behind me. ~Revolutions start when someone crosses the line.~ (Inspired by Jisa! Lyrics from Superchick's Cross The Line.)

} JANE AZGUARD { I'm waking up to ash and dust, I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust And then the chase entered the park, pavement changing to green lush grass, her boots bouncing on soft soil. That wasn’t the only thing only thing that changed as they entered the park, meters in, the girls form shifted and morphed, stretching and warping, bending reality to her will.
If Jane had been less puffed and less focused on running as fast as oxygen and limb would allow, she would have groaned in an appropriately dramatic manner. As it was she just ran faster, wishing for wings, or failing that some kind of motorized vehicle. This is going to be like that first chase all over again, that nearly did make her groan, I’ve only got one good ear left!
And the girl did not even look back, barely even a flick of her ear, hardly any acknowledgement of the gasping, heaving Ef officer doing her best to run her down. You are so being moved back down to Pinkie Pie status, Jane thought violently, and she attempted to heave herself forward faster and closer to the fleeing shifter girl. Ashleigh ~Does it make you mad to find that I have grown?~ Indeed I did catch the heavy boot steps and the huffing and puffing of the EF cop. I whinnied gleefully, tail flagging with excitement. The only reason she was keeping up was that I was at a slow gallop, barely dipping into the reserves of my speed well. I tossed my head, struck out a forehoof playfully, and increased my speed just a bit more.
A hedge, about two yards high, loomed in front of me. Increasing my speed, lengthening my stride I readied myself to take the jump. It was higher than the other jumps I had leaped over today. Powerful muscles in my hindquarters gathered and released as I pushed myself off the ground.
A bolt of pain shot up my leg. I was weightless for a few moments before my front hooves hit the ground, followed quickly by my back hooves. Another agonizing bolt of pain coarse through my body. I stumbled, nearly falling before righting myself. I touched the hoof to the ground gingerly and snapped it up almost as quickly. I shook the leg as if I could be rid of the pain that way, no amount of adrenaline would kill this pain. My ears went flat against my neck, burying themselves into my thick mane. My mouth gaped and my eyes rolled in pain.
My mind went back to the time where I had pretended that my leg was shot and had acted much like this. This time, the pain was no act. It was real. I couldn't run. I was in trouble. ~Bet it hurts so bad to see the strength that I have shown.~ (Inspired by Jisa! Lyrics from Superchick's Pure.)

} JANE AZGUARD { I'm waking up to ash and dust, I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust Now the beast was taunting her, Jane could see, in between hurried looks from the ground to the shifter from the cover of her sweat soaked fringe. Nickering, making all those weird horse noises that horses were so prone too, flicking her back legs in the air like some prancing pony. At least take me threatening her life seriously, the audacity of it made Jane furious. Four long legs against Janes two, stout and sturdy, sure, but there was only two of the things, and they were already pushing themselves as far and fast as they could go. Stupid shifters and their stupid animalistic advantages.
Forcing herself too look up, take notice of the terrain, to know what was going to turn up and try to make her job even more difficult than it was already turning out to be. There was a hedge, a god damned massive hedge, Jane groaned internally, and why on god green earth will someone but a hedge, in the middle of a public park! Why? She barely had the energy to keep running, putting one foot in front of the other, let alone having to scale a hedge, that the horse was going to be able to, in one clear leap.
And then the shifter leapt. It’s an amazing site to see, a horse taking off mid sprint, front hooves leaving the ground and back legs pushing, forcing gravity to give in, and let the animal, this huge heavy creature, launch itself into the air, and for a few moments in time, fly. It was like magic, with the gooey bits left in. But something was wrong with take-off, the launching pad uneven, not enough thrust. Either way, the lift off was a dismissal failure, a mockery of something great. And as Jane watched the lift off was cancelled, waited for a less cloudy day. The shifter was jiggling on the spot, rattling the injured limb and making soft whining sounds.
If it had been any other creature, any other animal, Jane would have stopped, considered the moral implications, decide that, maybe, today was the day to stop, and play Good Samaritan, to help another of god’s creatures that was in pain and hurting. But the kid was a shifter, and shifters, one way or another, were now the exception to the rule, every rule. Which meant murder, mutilation and bloodshed were on the menu.
Panting, like some giant slobbering dog, Jane pushed herself, being powered by the motive of hope alone. If the creature was injured, Jane had a window, or at least a crack of a chance at bagging herself a shifter, and dragging its corpse to shifter HQ and demand her cash.
Gaining with her every stride, Jane flicked the left side of her coat away from her rib cage, and grabbed the waiting Taser, dragging it out and flicking the switch. Jane knew what the Taser would do to a fully grown man, what it would do to a horse? Well if it meant wasting less bullets, Jane was prepared to give it a shot, pun fully intended, she sniggered to herself. Covering the last few meters, Jane levelled the Taser at the shifter and let fire, at the horse’s rump. I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus. Ashleigh ~Don't stand up, they'll shoot down the first one who tries. Try to change the world, they'll think you're out of your mind.~ It seemed as if my senses were heightened. I could smell my own sweat and fear, as well as insane lady's sweat and anger. I could hear insane lady's labored breathing and my own steady ones. I could hear the rustle of cloth as insane lady pulled something out of her coat. I turned my head, hopping sidling sideways to see her. I grunted, touching the limb to the ground again, testing it, and squealed not liking the answer I got.
I could see the insane lady approaching, panting as if she had run a marathon instead of a few blocks. I curved my next away from her, looking towards the forest and the shelter I knew I could find there. I whinnied loudly, almost desperately. I hoped that a fellow Supernatural would hear---or maybe even Jisa.
Turning again I flattened my ears, snapping my teeth at insane lady. I didn't know why I even bothered, considering insane lady probably didn't know horse speak and the fact that she wasn't another horse. I lifted my head again and gave another whinny.
The cop held an object that I couldn't identify with neither sight nor smell. I shook my head violently, snapping my teeth again. Eyes rolling I tried to scramble backwards. My one good leg slipped and I went down on my haunches before finding my footing again and heaving myself up up.
Two barbs shot from the object at the end of long cables. They sank into my hindquarters like a hungry predator. Electricity pulsed through me and I found that I could move but with difficulty. The pain caused by the device, which I figured out was a tazer, was only a throb compared to the sharp, piercing pain I felt by my ankle. It became harder to hold my shifted form to me, for the first time in my life. I shook my head, in a slow kind of way. I stepped slowly to one side, trying to dislodge the barbs from my skin.
I lifted my head to scream but no sound came out. Help! I thought silently. But I knew no help was to come. ~Revolutions start when someone crosses the line.~ (Inspired by Jisa! Lyrics from Superchick's Cross The Line.)

} JANE AZGUARD { I'm waking up to ash and dust, I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust The human body is made up of thousands of nerves, running and wrapping themselves around and around, carrying electronic messages and instructions to every arm, finger and muscle. When the Taser unleashes its charge of electricity at contact, the extra electricity surges through those channels and overwhelms all other instinct and control.
Jane was close enough now that she could see the wild terror and frustration in the brown huge disks that were the horse’s eyes, feel the fear and desperation, all that helpless rage. And for a moment Jane paused, she remembered a time, when she had been trapped, in an impossible situation, when her own pale discs had rolled in terror, and her screams had went unheard and prayers unanswered, all hope and desire burned away. But that had been a long time ago, and she had clawed and bleed her way free, leaving scraps herself behind.
The shifter seemed stiffened from the pulse of electricity, moving like she was made of stone, a statue masquerading as a horse. The shifter kept fidgeting, twitching as if attempting to dislodge the Taser’s fangs from her hide.
And that left Jane with an even bigger question that she needed to answer, how she was supposed to drag a 100 pound pony back to the EF base, she had no tools, no loader or truck to transport or move the stupid thing. The shifter might be limping and stiff, but she was still a horse, large and dangerous, that meant that either Jane was going to have to render the beast unconscious or draw her gun and fire whilst the creature was distracted and in pain.
Chewing on her lips, one hand still gripping the Taser, Jane began reached for her holster, flipping clip and cover, wrapping her hand around the grip and pulling the guy lose. Then with an efficient flick the safety was off and Jane was taking aim. I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus. This is it, the apocalypse, Whoa.
